New DUI policy could revoke license for 10 years
(San Francisco Chronicle - August 23, 2010)
Sacramento, Calif. (AP) -- People convicted multiple times of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could soon face stiffer penalties under a bill passed Monday by the California Assembly.
The bill, AB1601, would allow a court to revoke a driver's license for ten years if he or she was convicted of three or more separate DUI offenses in a decade.
Under current law a court can revoke a driver's license for two to five years.
Democratic Assemblyman Jerry Hill of San Mateo says the bill would allow the state to take 10,000 repeat offenders off the road every year.
The Assembly passed the bill which now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk.
